I love the Chromecast integration. It's just like a Chromecast with less functionality.

Why is it that with a Chromecast, I can tell assistant to play Stranger Things from Netflix on the living room TV, but I can't do that with an Android TV?

With a Chromecast I can tell assistant to turn on the living room TV, but I can't with Android TV. You would think that Google would have the right contacts within Google to have that kind of integration.

Overall, I have to say that I'm very disappointed with Android TV and Assistant. They have lots of great features but they just don't work together.

Seems like they've put their focus on integrating Chromecast and Google Home, probably because CC has a much larger installed base than AndroidTV.

That being said, I can turn on my TV with a command to my SHIELD. I don't have Netflix so I can't speak to Netflix integration, but YouTube treats it just like a Chromecast. I wish the weather function worked though. No reason they can't update the Chromecast reciever in Android TV to support that.

Android TV supports HDMI-CEC, are you sure these aren't issues by the hardware you are using? You are comparing a physical device to an OS.

I can turn on my shield with my Google home. It will only turn off the TV and not put the shield to sleep, but that's not super important to me.
And as for casting things, I've never had a problem other than with telling Google home to play something on Netflix specifically. From what I understand, though, that's because Netflix on Android TV doesn't support casting properly. It also seems they have no interest in fixing it, either. I can cast everything else I've tried, though. Play music, Pandora, Spotify, YouTube, cooking channel, etc are all fine.

I can turn on my TV, I just can't turn it off yet. Also it plays well with YouTube, I'm just sceptical about giving Google access to my Netflix info....I don't want them having to much of my personal habits information.

I asked Google this once in a support chat and they basically said the difference was that Chromecast hardware is made by Google while Android TV hardware is not. If Google ever puts out another first party Android TV box/dongle, there’s a fair chance it would be able to do all the things that Chromecast can.

RazerHey

Amen, i was just waiting for one guy in Google to figure this out and work their way up rhe ranks to fix this

The assistant on the Shield is very limited. Can't even display pictures.

Also the chromecast support itself is a bit dodgy. There are several streaming apps I use to cast that is very buggy when casting to the Shield but works flawlessly on the original chromecast.

I don't have netflix, but I am able to cast most things to my shield via my google home or assistant on my phone. CEC even turns on and off my tv/receiver/shield when I ask. You should probably make sure you have your device configured in the home app on your phone and make sure that cec is enabled on all your devices. Tell your assistants to sync all devices and see if that has any effect.

My shield doesn't work either but cec with my remote does. My Chromecast in the bedroom can turn my TV on and off with my Google Home so I agree it is super annoying.

This is a big pet peeve of mine, it's a known issue.

Sarcasm in the title of a post is kinda silly

Not being able to control Netflix is an Netflix issue I believe. I can't remember exactly where I read it but its been discussed many times on these threads. There is something with the Netflix protocol that won't allow it to cast to ATV but will CC.

Yep, it sucks and I blame Google's inconsistent, shitty implementation. And the issue isn't restricted to Sony's Android TV, either. It only works with actual Chromecasts and standalone Android TV boxes.

Note: Android TV and TVs with Chromecast built-in don't support the TV on/off feature.

There really should be no excuse for this. Hell, I have Alexa too, and she controls my Sony Android TV (including power on/off) far better than my Google Home does.

Voice commands have been working for me with the Shield. I refer to it as "Shield" or "the Shield".
