Thoughts on Upgrading to Mi Box?

by OhGawDuhhh

Hello! I had a Nexus Player for years and it was GREAT. After purchasing a 55" TCL 4K HDR TV, I've been using the Roku UI and... I really miss using Android TV and Chromecast.

The Mi Box is currently $59 at my local Walmart, so how is the Mi Box compared to the Nexus Player? Any weird quirks I should keep an eye out for? Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks so much for your time!!

Upgrading and Mii Box aren’t normally in the same sentence. Grab a shield.

I just did the upgrade, way better than the nexus player. No Amazon prime video since Google and Amazon won't play nice.

Replaced my Nexus Player with it. Used it for a few months, got tired if weird bugs. Switched back to the Nexus Player for a few more months. Then bought the Shield.

Just buy a shield. I know saving money is nice, but it wasn't worth the headaches.

I’ve had the mi box since launch and I love it. I use it for everything, movies , tv music and I even have it set up to play retro games. I picked up a Bluetooth game pad and have emulation set up from Dreamcast all the way back to Atari!

I have two Mi boxes. They go in the bedroom and the basement.

Our main TV has a Shield.

For $60 honestly you cannot go wrong with the box if that is your budget . It is a solid device. Fast. Kodi runs great on it.

Perfect, it is not. Absolutely fine, it is

If you plan using it solely for 4k, the shield is really your only option at this moment in time.

If you plan using it for mostly 1080p with some 4k sprinkled in, the Mi Box can do that for you.

Just don't rely on the Mi Box for 4k video. It can do 4k, but a lot of it will cripple it especially the 10bit stuff.

It does do 4K but sometimes not very well. Otherwise it’s a solid 1080p box for the price

Just no. Wifi wasn't that great. 4K sucked. No prime. I say (save up?) And get the Shield.

I got the Mi box for my Roku tv too. I used it for awhile and it didn't work too bad but it's better for 1080 over 4k. I have since upgraded to the shield tv and put the Mi box in my daughter's room

I just got the Channel Master Stream+. I already own the Nvidia Shield 500 gig edition on a different TV. So far, the Channel Master's dual tuners with OTA DVR functionality and superior remote are making me like it more, and it only costs half as much. The Stream Plus doesn't have the ability to use an external hard drive for DVR functionality, but they're working on it. So you have to use a Micro SD. The Stream Plus also currently lacks Netflix or Amazon video. I'm working on getting around that by using Kodi for the streaming services currently unavailable in the Google Play Store. It doesn't really matter, because I have a Roku stick that handles all the services currently unavailable on the Stream Plus on the same TV. I'm just tinkering with it for the hell of it. The idea of having dual tuner OTA DVR functionality and a complete streaming app catalog on one single open device seems sort of like a Holy Grail. I had no trouble setting up PlayStation Vue in Kodi, and it was part of the standard Kodi repository. although after only one day of tinkering with it, I don't believe you can set up recordings and such with PS Vue in Kodi, but at least you can watch live TV and your recordings just fine, complete with time-shifting.

Is the fire tv / stick an upgrade over a nexus player? My instincts say no and I should wait for that rumored dongle. I know the shield is superior, but trying to see if there are any alternatives under $99.

Had a nexus player, bought a mibox3, was pretty happy. Bought a Nvidia Shield, and it is in a league of it's own. I would skip the mibox every time now. Just go for the shield.

If you have any interest in watching HDR content I'd skip the mibox. Supposedly coming in a future update and it's been like that since release.

There's an Android TV device the FCC released, then covered up. Wait for that to be revealed. The mi box is 3/5th a solid player and you will notice the qwerks coming from a Nexus. Get something that actually has software support. Its been years and HDR still don't work on my mi box unless it's on a private nougat beta and I'm only watching Netflix. Auto refresh rate switching don't work, 4k generally has different colored bars around the picture, Chromecast sleeps until reboot and gives weird overlay colors... At minimum wait until May to see if Oreo drops for the mi box and see if 4k support improved
