Help?
AndroidTV is great , the processors used in the Sony TVS not so much
I just bought the x900e myself, and it is fine. Sure, it's slower than the nvidia, but it's pretty on par with my Mi box. One thing you can do, if you are comfortable with developer settings and using adb, is you can uninstall a lot of the bloat. That really made a difference with mine.
Someone has a list of apps they uninstalled. Just don't uninstall the com.sony.dtv.netflixmanager app like I did at first. It breaks using the Netflix button on your remote (you could still use the app itself, this is a special app to launch the Netflix app from the remote control),
Doing just fine on two X900e devices - a 65" and a 49". I'm still not sure what people define as "slow" and "sluggish." I click a button or launch an app, and it works.
I often wonder if people saying it's "slow" are upset it takes 4 seconds instead of 2, or it's clunky because they have to press the D-pad right 3 times instead of 1.
I've never had it crash, and the only complaint I have about it beling clunky is some of the settings are in the settings gear that can only be accessed at the bottom on the home screen. But 95% of the time, the Action Menu is where the setting I'm looking for is located.
Go check the AVSForum for the X900Es. You'll see way more complaints about a faulty panel than Android TV interface issues.
sony's android tv is awful... i have 2015 sony tv and after nougat update, i cant continue with this bugs,
i bought mi box yesterday...
There are issues:
After initial startup or reboot, slow and clunkly. Wait a few minutes
If you install certain apps, like plex, people report slowing.
Does get slow and clunky after months without a reboot. Then I just reboot.
Generally not an issue during video playback. Mine crashed a couple of years ago, but haven't noticed an issue since. I disabled samba app. I'm not a power user, just watch netflix, youtube, and prime.
I'm fine with mine. I have a shield as backup, but really half the time I just stay on the tv
I want to like android tv, and mostly I do. But after I got a HDR TV i started to get annoyed, and I have a Shield. Auto Colorspace switching has to be fixed or I am jumping ship to Apple TV 4K and moving the Shield to the bedroom. Ive already migrated to MrMC for the Plex integration over Kodi, and MrMC works on Apple TV 4K. So the only thing Im giving up on is the ability to Remote Play PS4, which is a hack anyway.
Umm, what are you really asking?
If you have ever used an Nvidia Shield (Far and away the best Android TV device), you will be thoroughly disappointed with Sony smart TVs. There is some noticeable sluggishness to the UI and ATV itself is not very well designed from a TV use standpoint (managing inputs, live TV, etc).
I love my X900E. I have a shield hooked up to it, but I rarely ever turn it on because the TV interface is just as good.
Keep in mind that many of the poor reviews about Android TV are regarding systems that are not Sony or Nvidia. Both Sony and Nvidia have license agreements with Amazon for Prime video, for example - that plays 4k HDR.
I gave up on Android TV(Nexus Player) after their latest 8.0 update. It really feels like Google did too when they switched YouTube over to the terrible web app.
Also could not cast Netflix to it (seems like the cast receiver can be blocked by the app), and the UI was super laggy to the remote for almost a year.
I just got a Chromecast ultra instead. Android TV imo is in the same boat as Android Wear.
AndroidTV is not perfect nor is it well supported even by Google, but the reviews have been overly harsh. It's not as user friendly as say the TCL Roku interface, but it's still very capable. The Shield TV is the best example of Android TV done right (even though it's outdated OS at this point), but Sony TVs are good in their own right. Don't worry about the reviews.
Plus if you want your TV to be more interesting you can start installing apps like VLC, Kodi, RetroArch (does everything RetroPie does), etc.
Not really sure the reviews were saying Android TV is awful or Android TV on the X900E specifically, but in either case, it's fine.
I'm a X900E owner as well as having an Nvidia Shield on another TV so I'm obviously good with Android TV in general.
On the TV specifically, the only real complaint I've had is that it can take a second or two for the UI to present itself after pressing the Home button. You may think the press did not register and hit it again which just dismisses the menu when it pops up.
Other than that one case, which is easy enough to adjust to, everything else is reasonably smooth and responsive. Again, as others have said, this is subjective. After the latest update (Jan/Feb timeframe) things seemed to get even smoother.
Keep in mind that people are more likely to post reviews if they have had a negative experience. I'm not saying they aren't valid. Just pointing out that the big picture view might appear to skew negatively.
Welcome to the club and I hope you enjoy your new TV!
Some of those reviews you mentioned might have been mine also and you are right. Don’t get me wrong, the Android Os overall is flexible and can allow a lot of customization and usage.
But on the tv like me x930E, it’s very sluggish. I don’t feel comfortable messing with system apps just to get my tv to be faster and trust I’ve tried all the recommendations online. Nothing works. It’s an is problem. Moreover, it’s very unintuitive compared to lg webos and Samsung tizen on the tv. The over design is boring. It lags and crashes. O That’s true. Sometimes you get frustrated by the latency with the supplied remote. Even worst is text input.
But after, several months, I’ve learned to live with it. Connected some good set-top boxes to avoid using the tv os and only use the great hardware as a monitor: buy a powerful android tv box and an Apple TV 4K. You will realize that the Apple TV Os has a better user interface and experience and is constantly updated and give access to premium contents. Great UX too. I won’t bring on the Nvidia Shield argument: it’s a personal preference thing. But text input on the Apple TV is worst with the iPhone assist which makes it easy.
I've a similar Sony TV. I've never had it crash. The ui design is fine. I do find the ui performance to be slow - they don't put great gpus in these things. I like Android and I like Android TV as an OS.
I do use an nvidia shield to drive my TV, since it has a much faster processor and thus the UI is smoother.
