Is it possible to remotely erase an Android TV device (Shield, Nexus Player, Bravia, etc.)?

by kurmudgeon

I recently had a brush with a failing Android TV device (Sony XBR55X850C) where it couldn't boot due to a hardware failure - Backlight Issues). This got me thinking about how my Google account was now on a device that I couldn't even get to a homescreen to wipe.

My concern is that if I was to sell or toss this device, but someone picks it up and fixes it, they would have access to my data and/or Google account.

Is there a way to remotely wipe these types of devices? If not remotely, any other remedy to clear your Google account from an Android TV device that doesn't fully boot?

Edit : I did just stumble upon this nifty tool from Google:

So if anyone else is in a situation where your Android TV device is lost/stolen/damaged, you can use this to remove your Google account's access from the device.

Edit 2 : As a side note, my failing backlights on my X850C were due to me having the brightness turned up nearly all the way up for a prolonged period of time. According to a few of the repair folks I've spoken with, turning the brightness / backlight above 70% of it's max will burn out the backlight, backlight inverter, or power supply board much quicker because of the amount of power that is drawn. They all recommended not going above 50% of the max backlight brightness and never to go above 70%. With this in mind, I'm now able to use my X850C again. After keeping the power off for a couple hours, I plugged it in and powered it up. I was able to get it to the homescreen and immediately turned the brightness down to about 10 in all of the various profiles (App, App Video, HDMI, etc.) I've been using this Bravia as a bedroom TV for a few nights now with no issues.

So if you're having an issue with a newer 4K smart TV like I did (6 blinking red lights), try unplugging for an hour or so, then plugging it in and turning the brightness down, then test the device again. Per my repair guy: If it still fails, try to wipe it. If you can't wipe it, and it can't be fixed, destroy the main board before discarding the TV or selling it for parts.

You can wipe over the network via the --wipe_data command in ADB, but you're not going to wipe anything that can't boot, remotely or otherwise.

Just change your google password if you sell/toss the device.
