Noob question: Is what I have an Android TV box?

by cag8f

Hi all. I friend of mine here in Thailand gave me what he calls an 'Android box' ( photos of device ), which, when properly configured should be able to stream various movies, TV shows, to my TV from the internet. Would this fall into the 'Android TV Box' category? My assumption is 'yes,' but I just wanted to confirm.

I have some questions about setup and configuration, and I want to know the best sub to ask.

Thanks in advance.

edit: Thanks to /u/danielwray , I found the answer. What I have is this model (or some kind of reasonable facsimile).

I don't think it's "Android TV". It looks like a modified version of Android 4.4 so you can navigate on TV. If this is the case, it's not the same at all. It's probably old and crap too, sorry.

Can't definitively say for sure without any screenshots of the UI, but going off of the fact that it runs Android 4.4, I can reasonably say that it's not Android TV, since Android TV didn't become a thing until Android 5.0.

As long as you can set everything to landscape mode the regular android apps will likely work and those that won't you can cast from a phone. I use an app 'set orientation' to force landscape mode - its pretty effective.

Well you could try going to http://android.com/tv to get a look at some of the official devices that run the Android TV operating system, or take a look at the sidebar where we list the common devices. It's not hard to find out with a bit of legwork on your end.

Quick Google search says yes. Will it be good? Who knows.
