Not as many native apps as I would have expected

by stoffel_bristov

Recently bought an Nvidia shield. I incorrectly thought that any app that would work on Android was also supported on Android TV.

I like many things about the device, but two of the first apps I wanted to use (Apps I need to convince my wife to cut the cord namely--- the CW app and the Playon app) are not natively supported.

Am I missing something?

Yep as stated Playon can be side loaded (just did it lol). Hadn’t used it in over a year, but still have the server running on the computer.

FYI: couple of my must have apps for Shield

Terrarium - for tv shows and movies

Chrome web browser

Mouse toggle- onscreen cursor for use with shield remote

Plex Media Server

Send anywhere, for file transfers from other devices to shield

TV app repo

MXPlayer

What are you using Playon for if I may ask. I used Playon for long time while I had my roku boxes before switching to Shield.

Android and Android TV are separate but related platforms, and not every Android app supports Android TV. You can sometimes sideload standard Android apps onto Android TV, but I don't recommend it.

Someone on XDA modded the Fire TV CW app to run on Android TV . That is what I would recommend. You can also use PuppetMaster.TV and the CW puppet from the Rekodi repository.

CW works fine sideloaded. Use TvAppRepo to create a leanback shortcut w/icon. I also use the 'set orientation' app to force sideloaded apps into landscape mode. Not sure if its necessary for all sideloaded apps but a couple I use need it and it just runs in the background.

The only apps I can't get to work are the tveverywhere apps for AMC, SYFY & USA so I cast those.
