Apps that support 4K/ HDR on Sony X900E?

by Sweaty_Palms_

Doing some research before my unit arrives, but I haven’t been able to find a good list of native apps for Android TV that will support 4K or HDR.

I’d like to plan on how to cover the gaps with other devices for apps like Vudu that won’t play 4K via the Android TV app. Can anyone speak from experience or know if a list compiled somewhere?

Holy crap, three responses and not a single one that just answers the question:

  • Netflix
  • Amazon
  • Vudu Update, Vudu is on the menu for 4K/HDR/Atmos, however it's not the built in app that comes with the tv. Go to the play store and search Vudu, install that app and you can have 4k/HDR Vudu on the tv.
  • YouTube (no HDR for the 900e)
  • Google play movies
  • Sony Ultra (Sony's Vudu basically)
  • Smithsonian Earth

That's all I can think of. Netflix and Amazon will be your best bang for buck, with Vudu being a great spot to redeem uhd ultraviolet codes or just rent/buy directly. You can also Use Google play movies for rental/purchase, or at least link your Vudu and Google play accounts to movies anywhere for cross platform support and playback.

Netflix is the best one. In terms of performance especially. Watching Grand Tour in 4K HDR on Amazon Prime had two issues when I tried it. It takes longer than Netflix to buffer into 4K, and sometimes it stutters during the video. The performance of the app itself isn't great or it doesn't utilise the hardware properly.

It's not an internet issue, the TV is connected via LAN on a fibre optic network with 116Mbps speeds.

The advantages your 4K HDR TV will have over an external Android TV media player like the NVIDIA Shield is:

  • it will actually have correct colorspace outputs for Mixed SDR and HDR video playback because video co-processing chipsets handle this sort of thing separately, independent of the Android TV OS.
  • upscaling of all non 4K video content will produce superior picture output quality.

These are both known problems with the Shield's current Nougat Firmware. Poor picture upscaling quality will never get fixed.

Downsides with a 4K TV is audio support will not be as good and the TV's chipset for running Android TV is slower.

So pick you poison.

To be honest with you 4K HDR Kodi is noticeably better on the LibreELEC Operating System running on AMLogic S912 hardware and 4K HDR Plex is better on Apple TV 4K hardware.

When did the x900e add HDR support for Google Play? Wasn't compatible even a few months ago.

Shield with my X900E is incredible. I don't even access the TV's Android OS anymore. Kodi, SPMC, Netflix, Amazon, Plex, plus many more all support 4K HDR.

I have the same TV and after a few months purchased the roku ultra... It controls the on/off allowing you to not use the Sony remote at all. Roku ultra is 4k hdr, a lot smoother os, and easiest to use. I'd recommend the same to you.... The TV is amazing btw
