Looking to stream 4k video from NAS to Sony x900e

by mleroy42

I recently purchased a Sony 49x900e to jump into the 4k world. In the past, I have saved all video files to my Synology NAS and streamed from there for viewing purposes. I tried to download 4k movies so I could take advantage of the new TV. However, I haven't been able to find a way to get the files to open. Have any of you had success with this? Or does anyone have any ideas? Any input is appreciated.

EDIT: I tried a new 4k video file stored on my NAS, directly wired through my network to my TV. It opened with VLC player. That seems to at least work for now. Thank you all for your ideas and assistance. I at least have multiple options to try if VLC doesn't work all the time.

Check to see if your NAS is Plex compatible. Install Plex server on the NAS if you can. Install the Plex for Android TV on your TV, done.

For 4k streaming, I recommend Kodi or SPMC. I have the same TV, while I do use my Shield instead of the TV's android OS, it'll still work for you. Look up the wiki for kodi and how to setup smb or nfs shares.

If you don't want the overhead of a media server running on your NAS, you can play the 4k files, or any files really, straight over your local network from your NAS to your TV (the great part of having Android).

I use MiXplorer to browse my local network and play the video files with MX Player Pro with a custom codec pack on my Bravia. MX Player uses the hardware on the TV for decoding 4k. Also, I have a gigabit network with CAT 6 and my TV is wired in. But with all this, my Bravia plays 4K files directly from a network share this way, works fine.

The networking in the 900e is a joke. I used Plex and the Kodi Plex pluggin in the tv and anything over 50mbps was not reliable. Shield tv works great but there is color space switching issues (it doesn't do it yet, hopefully Oreo fixes this). A coworker has had good luck with his Roku, but I haven't dug mine out to try.

What player are you using? Default? Have you tried MX or vlc?

I've tried every possible ways to stream 4k files out of my NAS, never able to make it work perfectly during the all movie. I have a Philips Android TV 4k tv connect with cable directly on router with my NAS too. It worked well on UPNP during a good time and then started to buffer before the end of movie. Impossible with Kodi and even less with Plex. Works perfectly on Netflix and Youtube tough. Really don't know why it struggles with NAS.

Good luck with streaming 4k out of your NAS. ;)
