Dolby vision on mi box or shield

by silentmax24

Do the android tv boxes like the mi box and shield support dolby vision? In case they don't, will they? I am thinking to get a new tv and so i though i should get an lg or sony because of dolby vision, but i still would prefer using an external box for the smart part of the tv. But will i have to stick with thw tv's apps in order to get dolby vision? Thanks for any answer

No they do not support Dolby vision and I doubt they will especially the mi box.

The S912 and the upcoming S922 SoC from Analogic have Dolby Vision support. MediaTek also have existing and future offerings.

It's a chipset (and certification) issue for your aforementioned products, not something that is rectified by firmware updates as Dolby mandates some propriety hardware (or at least hardware requirements).

Given the current HDMI, HDR, HFR and SoC landscape, rather than trying to nab one of the cable provider boxes with your requirements, consider waiting or a cheap interim solution while new SoCs appear later this year with HDMI 2.1, and thus 120fps and variable refresh rate support alongside the four HDR formats.

You cannot even play back DV 4K HDR Bluray Rips on any device currently on the market because there in No media player software that can handle the dual layer DV metadata. Simply none.

Buying any device based only on fancy tech specs is a foolish way to purchase hardware. You need Firmware and software support.

The only external media player device that can stream single layer 4K DV from Netflix and iTunes is the Apple TV 4K. I'm not sure if high end Roku's or the Chromecast Ultra has DV Netflix streaming support.

Apple, Sony, LG and Dolby Labs have been working very hard ironing out DolbyVision bugs. They should be the only companies even being looked at when it comes to DV support at the moment. You need OLED TV to get the most out of DV.
