Pausing Live TV via the hdhomerun app on my Shield is new to me. Not sure when it was introduced. Does anyone know how well this works? How much live TV will it pause? Is it using my shield as the DVR or recording it online?

Yep! Since that update I've noticed more glitch playback but still works better than Live Channels!
From a post on their forum:
"The Android release currently in QA adds the live TV pause/FF/RW feature for non-DVR customers and customers with legacy HDHomeRun models. Protected channel support is not part of this Android release.
The feature uses RAM for the rewind buffer and for the start of the pause buffer. If you pause for long enough it will use internal flash. We figure you will likely catch up to real time and it will switch back to using RAM for buffering. The feature includes protection against flash overuse."
