The jbl speaker with assistant, is it enough to ditch nvidia shield

by ifndefx

I saw the JBL soundbar that was in Google ionic, and I have a NVIDIA shield box. Just wondering do you reckon that soundbar rocks especially since it has far field mics built in.

Would it be enough to get rid of the shield, especially since I don't use it for gaming ? I'm hoping that it would have better tuner support than the shield (and I don't have to use Plex).

I'm very intrigued by this sound bar, but it'll come down to price for me. I can see it being quite pricey

Not for me, as I have a dedicated receiver and 5.1 surround. But yes, if priced well and the performance is decent, I think it's a great solution for your average household. I wouldn't be against using it in my living room if I had a dedicated theater room.

One thing I don't understand is who this is for? Price wise this will cost more than a comparable soundbar, and it's a safe bet that this will cost more than the shield. IMO the person who would be ok buying a device like this (cost-wise) most likely either already has a shield and an AVR setup. People looking for cheaper products will buy the cheapest soundbar they can (some even including subs) and a Fire Stick or Roku Stick, which is why I think Google really missed the mark with that ADT-2 dongle.

This is anecdotal obv. but almost everyone in my life has done it that way. When I suggest the Shield or Fire TV 4K for the Amazon crowd, I'm usually met with a "but the stick is only $30". They do not see the performance difference - only the cost.

These won't be the people buying an expensive soundbar just because it has Android TV/Google asst. I on the other hand, think it's an interesting concept and I'm even considering to buy it for one of the TV's in the house BUT I already have decent setups and can't see where it would be an improvement.

Yes it will be enough. If you don't use gaming or Plex as a server on your Android TV.

It will be super optimized with Android P.

I got the info it's running a Amlogic processor, almost certain the T962E which has the "HDMI-In" option. It's close to the S905X SoC found in ADT-2 and Mi Box.

For me this is perfect for a bedroom TV. For a main living room TV I am still sticking with the Shield and a more powerful receiver.

Guys has anybody noticed if this device comes with a remote control?
