What to install on new NVidia Shield

by leemillerau

Hi there.

I've just splashed out to buy a Nvidia Shield as a replacement TV box for my Minix X7, which I haven't been updating recently.

What are the must-have apps in your opinion?

I have local videos and music on a PC hard drive but also want to stream. Main interests are sports (Rugby Union - especially Super Rugby and Mitre10 Cup since I'm from NZ, English Premier League, Bundesliga and the upcoming FIFA World Cup) plus some TV and movies (but not a lot).

Do I still need Kodi or is it easier just to use a mix of apps - YouTube, VLC for my local media, Tunein, BBC iplayer plus a VPN or DNS service, maybe Terrarium or Morpheus, Zattoo for German TV, plus an IPTV app and playlist for NZ and Australian TV?

Any examples from what you have chosen to install yourself would be helpful in trying to work out where to start.

Thanks for your advice.

If you have a gaming PC, I'd recommend you'd download the Steam Link app once that gets released in a couple of days (May 21st).
It's an app that lets you stream your PC games in Big Picture Mode to your TV, or even stream your regular desktop.

I'd imagine the Nvidia Shield would be the optimal AndroidTV device for that purpose

Edit: As for media consumption. If you have local files you want to run, Kodi is the way to go.
For streaming services I'd recommend using the dedicated apps, since they tend to be supported better

I use VLC for local network, because I don't need a neat UI for movies I've already seen, and then I use PuppetMaster.TV with REKODI repo, with a DNS/VPN service, so that I can watch BBC, and local live streams... (Only reason for a separate VPN is because I need a service that works when we visit China and they included everything).

My SmartDNS (set up in the router) allows me to use Swiss Zattoo. For the playlist, look at TVirl or CumulusTV. But I prefer PuppetMaster.TV after I got the dev to include the DK national broadcaster.

But I guess you need more than that, because you list a lot of sports.

Might be a stupid question but is it possible to save for offline for streaming services such as youtube, netflix or nba?

hey guys, quick question about android tv. was thinking of getting NVidia shield for my grandparents to watch ethnic tv because ROKU is shit and constantly deletes the app for it. If i install the app for ethnic tv on a NVidia shield/minix neo u9 will it get deleted as well with updates? Or can we safely watch what we want to watch without having to constantly reinstall it? What is the ease of use of the device? Is it easy to teach 80 y.o. to use it?
