Go in other direction:Try MiBox remote. Stock rom MiBox (Android 6.0) cec is somewhat inflexible. Will work fine when you get Oreo update in near future.
I can use my Sharp TV remote with the Mi Box, there's a setting on the TV. The Mi Box supports it out of the box for me.
You will want to enable CEC on your TV, then on your box. Then cross your fingers.
