Remote Control app question

by UberGoatx

Using the official Android TV Remote Control phone app and an Nvidia Shield TV 2017, how can I change the volume on the TV with my phone screen off while just using the volume buttons on the side of the phone?

I can control the TV volume with the phone screen on by just using the side volume buttons on my phone, but when the phone screen is off it switches back to controlling the phone volume. It is just slightly annoying having to turn on my phone screen first every time I'd like to change the volume on the TV.

Agreed, that would be nice but its not an option now

You could turn up the screen timeout on your phone so the screen stays on 🤷‍♂️

ADDENDUM: I presume you are using an Android phone as the remote. iOS is probably similar or even tougher to workaround.

Unless I am wrong somewhere, I believe on unrooted phones only media playback apps and casting apps have the ability to use the volume buttons while screen locked.

You might be able to bypass this on a rooted phone using a keyboard remapper paired with Tasker intents. I myself would not know the process to do so.
