It can show a hardware issue with the remote if replacing batteries does not helping.
My remote started dying with same symptoms. So if you have warranty and problem does not resolve you should definitely arrange a replacement, because this type of remote is not sold separately.
I bought a non-voice bluetooth one for replacement.
Mine used to do this all the time. The only fix I know of is to disconnect everything and return it to the store.
I've had this happen, but everything seems to be working fine now. Some troubleshooting I did:
Replaced batteries. Sometimes batteries would have enough juice to power up/reboot but not to pair.
Reboot system. Seems obvious, but sometimes rebooting and holding the two pairing buttons again would help (even if the screen doesn't prompt you to hold the buttons after startup, do it anyways).
Keep remote close to Mi Box. Sometimes if I left the room with it I would come back and it would be unpaired. It would be difficult to pair it again sometimes.
Unpair, restart, and repair remote from settings. This is what ultimately fixed everything for me. Doing this reset the pairing and started anew. It has seemed to work fine ever since the successful re-pairing.
