Streaming live tv

by TheLittleM

Hey guys,

I live abroad and cable tv here is véry limited. I'm thinking of getting either an MI/Shield box, but I'm wondering how hard it is to stream US/EU tv-channels on there for someone with limited knowledge of streaming. From what I understand I have to download kodi and do it through there, but when looking through information about Kodi online this seems quite complicated. So basically, is it hard easy to do in practice or is an IPTV subscription the way to go for me?

There are various options for using IPTV on an AndroidTV box/TV.

Using the built-in Live Channels system would be the preferred option, however needs a third-party app to integrate IPTV. There is the beta/free app TVirl, which works well but does not do autoupdate of the channel list and EPG, and does not have DVR. There is the paid app Streaming Streamin, which does autoupdate, and has a DVR option still in beta.

Next you can use an app directly for the IPTV. There are various ones, including Kodi with the Simple IPTV plugin. None of these include DVR directly.

If you have another machine on your network, you can use it to install a DVR software on it. Free ones are tvheadend and nextpvr. You can the use plugins in Kodi to control everything, or in the case of tvheadend an app to integrate it into Live Channels directly.

For paid DVR software, there is Emby and Plex, with Emby being the preferred option as it can use IPTV directly and simply, whilst Plex needs specific hardware (hdhomerun) or a third party app running to simulate it. Both of these software have an app on AndroidTV.

Finally there is the hardware option, Hdhomerun, and then use the app on AndroidTV to integrate it with live channels.

Personally I alternate between tvheadend and TVirl integrated into live channels. Works well but the lack of DVR annoys me.

Iptv is the way to go honestly. I use Mi Box (I just stream videos, so no need for Shield) and use Vue for cable. It's US only service but a paid service is much better than what Kodi can offer, and more reliable.

Then you can get a few free news channels through apps. PlutoTV will give you internet channels. It's not as good as proper IPTV but better than Kodi.

I'd try IPTV. I've been using Vader streams for about a month now and I'd highly recommend it. www.vaders.co is where i get mine from.
