Mi Box 4k Performance for Streaming Services (MM and Oreo)?

by jasswolf

Given the S905X is a sturdy 4k capable SoC, I'm interested to see how the Mi Box has progressed since launch, when it was described as too slow for 4k use. Have recent optimisations improved this? Is it a 4k60fps device for x265 streaming, as intended by AMLogic?

Seeking real-world experience with the device using MM build 1901 or Oreo beta, so we all have a reference point as we migrate to 4k TVs. HDR performance on Oreo would also be of interest.

4k streaming in Kodi (downloaded rips in shared folder) and YouTube work fine for me after getting the ethernet adapter. Stuttering issues before that was caused by the slow wifi of the box.

There has been no optimizations in the last two years. In some areas it has gotten worse. I would only recommend it for a "second TV". Although it plays 4k it is generally poor in my experience. In most instances you can see frame drops due to the lack of refresh rate switching . The only work around is to root it and even then its not tethered

If you are interested in 4k get a shield or i can guarantee you will be unhappy and it will be a "poor man pays twice" scenario.
