Mibox hooked to tv, hardrive attached to mibox.
Use vlc to play things using the mibox,
BUT
Use my phone like a tvguide, and pick things for vlc to play on the tv. Not stream, not cast.

What's wrong with Kodi on the Mibox and Yatse/Kore on your phone?
Not sure if possible, but archos video player is a simple interface. Tv show category and movie. Scrapes for you and can sort by title, year, etc
Use Kodi. Point it to your local storage. Job done.
