I'm about to lose my mind with Mi Box's wi-fi problem

by ace66

Hello, I just bought a Mi Box (MDZ-16-AB) yesterday. I took it out from its box, set it up with my Android phone (Xiaomi Mi 5s), it connected to the internet and worked great, for a couple of hours.

After that, after I unplug and replug it once, it stopped connecting to wi-fi completely. I've tried EVERYTHING. Factory reset both modem and device couple of times, changed channels on my router (tried every channel), tried different router and different wi-fi network, tried connecting it to my phone's hotspot (with and without password), tried connecting through static IP and finally installed firmware version 1304 (original install was V.6.0.1.-1901). Nothing is working. What to do? I don't want to return this brand new device to warranty and wait 3-4 weeks for them to do nothing.

What is the problem exactly? It doesn't see the wifi or connects to it but then it is slow? I'll share my experience with you and hope that might help you. My mi box has a little problem while connected to a 2.4ghz wifi, if at the same time has a Bluetooth device connected (like the remote) the connection gets really slow. It looks like in my case the 2.4ghz wifi and Bluetooth has some kind of interference. You can test if you have the same problem by removing the batteries from the remote and disconnecting all the other bluetooth devices from the mibox and then control the mibox through wifi with a smartphone. So in case you have this problem just connect to a 5ghz that in my case works fine together with the bluetooth devices or (if you don't have a 5ghz router) control your mibox with the phone

I would try connecting to someone else's wifi away from your network to see if it will connect. If connection is fine there, you know it's your network which is common in crowded wifi areas. I had connection issues in my super congested apartment, and what fixed it is some simple router changes: 2.4ghz to ch 1 (auto disabled), ch bandwidth 20mhz 5ghz to ch 48 (auto disabled) ch bandwidth 40mhz Set static ip addresses/reservations for all your devices Use 5ghz if you can get a strong signal.

You may have defective box though and need to exchange it. Frustrating, I know.

I had this problem. I did a factory reset, used my phone to sign into account (via Bluetooth) and within normal Mi Box setup it was able to connect to WiFi. Didn't have that problem again (to be fair I keep it on the same network and haven't tried changing it).

I doubt the Google sign in step effects anything, but that's the only variable. The main thing is to connect to your wifi during setup.

Looking at what you've already attempted here, just take it back for an exchange as it's almost certainly a faulty device.

If you just bought it. Assuming at walmart? You can take it back for another one. But assuming you bought online from the way your talking.
