I am done with Nvidia dragging their feet supporting Dolby Vision. Apple TV wins the streaming box race now with Atmos support.

Nah. I might ditch Shield for an AndroidTV device that supported it, but not for an Apple product.
I wouldn't use an apple tv if steve jobs crawled out of his grave and handed it to me for free
But it still not support DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-HD MA and DTS:X, right?
Shield TV doesn't support Dolby Vision but it support everything else including Atmos.
Anyone else still happy with 5.1 digital audio? Atmos, vision, and anything else doesn't really appeal to me at this moment in time. Maybe it's because I dont have thousands of dollars to spend to upgrade my speakers and receiver lol.
Ehh, DV, while a slight improvement, certainly isn't enough to completely switch players/eco systems and give up my Plex Server.
Both still have their strengths.
Does it still weirdly decode all lossless audio streams to output LPCM for some stupid reason?
Apple doesn't win the race until they release it.
They'll likely win the race, but your post is premature.
Apple TV 4K can't play DTS and cannot direct play MKV media on Plex. Far more important than Dolby Vision imo.
That's all well and good. However, ATV still doesn't do YouTube 4K. It can't bitstream (I know LPCM is lossless but I just prefer to have decoding done by the AVR, if only so I can read the format on the display).
I love my combo of LG TV and Shield. I watch all Netflix on the LG app (Dolby Vision/Atmos included). As long as there's not a format (Maybe MKV at some point) that supports the layer of dynamic metadata of DV in the same file I won't care as much for DV from disc. The only way to watch that right now is an Oppo UHD player which is really expensive. Until then I'm happy with low bit rate (but DV included) material from netflix and UHD Bluray with HDR10.
You also dont have to dick around with colorspace on the Apple TV to get HDR/SDR working properly.
All I want is my shield to know to change to Rec.2020 when the source is HDR and change back to Rec 709 when its done :-(
/u/suresh31 -- let me how much you'd like to get out of your ShieldTV.
I’d switch to a fire stick before I gave up my shield for Apple lol.
Id replace my mi box with it if managing kodi wasnt such a pita on it.
It requires a Mac to install Kodi on it right and weekly renewal?
The Shield supports TrueHD Atmos soundtracks from 4K Blu-rays. Lossless Atmos tracks, lossless surround channels.
The Apple TV will support Atmos for Dolby Digital Plus soundtracks from streaming iTunes movies. Lossy Atmos tracks, lossy surround channels.
I’m sure Apple will make it sound good, but unless the update also includes bitstreaming / passthrough, streaming Atmos on the Apple TV will never sound as good as 4K Blu-ray / lossless Atmos (aka what the Shield has been able to do since ~2015).
Howdy
Don't know what you were waiting for, Dolby Vision requires hardware the shield doesn't have.
Someone released a phone with Dolby Atmos Speakers recently..... That standard is sortof a joke now imo.
Yea with the hdr problems with my shield I just use it as a smartthings hub now. Got a few free apple TVs and never looked back. Just got an atmos setup last month too so this really seals the deal for me personally. I don’t have any biases just prefer something that works with what I have.
Bye
