Mi box 3 overheating

by kristijanzulic

Hi, I have international version of Mi box 3 and I have constantly overheating problems... Mostly I watch only YouTube and IPTV through Kodi and after about one hour maybe a little bit more I always hear click and box freeze and then I need to unplug and wait to get cold because box burning.. I have to mention that this box I have about half year and this problem is here about 2 last months. I thought maybe VPN is a problem but then I tried without and it's the same. And I have to say that at the beginning box used to streaming for about 5-10 hours (all day) constantly and never had this issues, barely warm

Ps. I have the latest available marshmallow firmware version.. Maybe Oreo will fix that if ever comes out.. I run it at 1080p 60fps

Let me ask you a question,is something plugged in to USB port? The thing is that, I have Mi box too and I have installed led strip on the back side of my TV. My strip has USB connector and when I plug it in to my Mi box it starts to overheat and reboot.

are you using the factory supplied power brick?

do you have sufficient ventilation space on all sides of the device?

Does the top of the device get too hot to touch?

Very atypical problem. Never see such issue on 300+ units deployed in senior center where I volunteer.

Nothing will kill my Mi Box faster than running Kodi. I have to put active cooling on it if I want to run Kodi for more than an hour or sometimes even less. No other thermal issues outside of Kodi, but it does still get pretty damn warm.

Suggest a small variable speed 5V usb wired fan myself.

do you have your box in direct sunlight?

try using power plug on different circuit. Maybe 'click' you mention is something on internal house wiring?

Try to give it more distance from tv and any heat source. Ventilation on all sides. You can even ventilate the bottom by using rubber adhesive feet.

If it's still hot, most likely defective.

hi, I have been using the mi box 3 for about a year now but noticed recently that it gets hot, ie, overheats & the video no longer is responsive, just freezes or just grinds away trying to connect, etc so need to shut it off or unplug til it cools off. I read about heating problems with other android boxes, they were all resolved by adding a fan for cooling which is what I will probably need to do.

I know I'm somehow late in this discussion, but I just recently got my MiBox and had the same issue. The way I solved it, with some fairly simple DIY.

You'll need to buy a USB 120mm x 120mm 5V cooling fan (search the term in Amazon, eBay, Banggood etc. for as low as 5 USD). Disclaimer: I would suggest to spend a little more than this to get a more "silent" model. Read the buyers comments.

You'll then need the product's box (if you do not have it, you can cut any cardbox box, to the size of the fan and make sure that the fan has plenty of room below to ventilate (use some screws as feet, or make something up). Then you can just put the MiBox on top of the fan.

Depending on the orientation of the fan, it will either push cold air towards the MiBox, or pull the hot air away from it. I would suggest to try both orientations and see what works best for your environment.

When I watching iptv by perfect player then it's barely warm but when I watching by other apps which requires Mx player then it's kinda hot but never restart. I got restarts and very hot only with YouTube and Kodi
