About the Mi Box 4k and Harmony remotes with numbers

by Andriusdude

Hello there, I come to this sacred internet place to ask some legit questions.

Some context: my parents have a Mi Box which they use to watch TV from their native country I provide to them using TVirl (plus a custom .m3u) and they change channels using Google Live Channels, they have real problems changing channels with the D-pad on the Mi Remote, don't ask me why.

What I wanted to know is if someone has used (or knows if it's possible) to use a Harmony remote (...or has suggestions of other good remote options) with numbers (like for example the 350 or the Smart Control) to change channels in Live Channels, like a normal TV interface would do, for example if they want to go to the channel 37 they press the 3 button and then the 7.

Also would like to know if it's possible to configure any button like for example the coloured ones, or the "Watch TV" one to wake the Mi Box and open Live Channels automatically.

Thanks in advance.

Presumably the numbers on them map the same as a normal keyboard would, so if you have one lying around you can connect temporarily you could test with that

I am not sure about opening up Live channels automatically. But any of them should work just fine via bluetooth or IR. I am using a 650 with mine. Currently when I hit watch tv, it turns my tv/receiver on, and switches to the correct input launching the mi box.

If you have a hub based harmony remote, you can connect to the Mi Box as a PC through Bluetooth. This let's you use the number inputs as well as channel up and down. I believe the "DVR" key on a Windows PC will open live channels.

For IR, the Mi Box has no codes for numbers. So unless Xiaomi updates it or you can find and replace the files (harder than it sounds), there is no way of getting number commands with Mi Box's built in IR.

I have discovered that you can add a device called FLIRC and pair the Harmony infrared remotes to it and that allows those non-Bluetooth remotes to control the channels in Live Channels app using the numeric buttons.
