Newbie advice needed :)

by davenetman

Hi folks. I'm currently just using a firestick, and am looking to get something better. I just learned about Android tv boxes, and there's soooo many available, I need some advice.

My primary uses would be tv/movie streaming and certain games. For tv streaming, I currently use TerrariumTV on my firestick, and plan on staying with that.

As for games, I am not a hardcore gamer. But I would like to run some emulators (PS1, Dreamcast, etc). And my favorite game of all time which I REALLY want to be able to play is "Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee", which I played on the original Xbox and is now available for Android. I'm just learning about these boxes, and noticed that alot of the cheaper ones use an Amlogic cpu. But on the play store, the description for Oddworld says "PLEASE NOTE: Broadcom and Amlogic devices NOT SUPPORTED!", so I'm guessing I should avoid those.

What are some good boxes I should consider? I read that the Nvidia Shield is considered the best, but at $200 that's out of my price range. I'd like to stay in the $60 range. I saw one online called the Beelink GS1, which uses the Allwinner H6 (quad-core Cortex-A53 processor), and I can get one for around $65. Is that a good choice for my needs?

Thanks in advance!!!

full list of devices is HERE . Most ppl here keep conveniently forgetting it. See what's available to get for you

Most TV's use the Mediatek chipset. If you decide for a generic android box, check them out on Freaktab forums

Games = a half decent GPU and the one in the AMLogic S912 MEECOOL M8S Pro L will give you better bang for the buck (it faster and more powerful) vs the one in the AMLogic S905 that is in the Xiaomi Mi Box.

The only thing you will really miss out on with the MEECOOL is Chromecasting.

There are always Retro games emulators that can run nearly anything, like the RetroX App. But first you need a half decent GPU.

The king is Nivida Shield. The 2nd best probaly MiBox. 3rd Nexus Player. For the price you said you can afford, would roll with MiBox or Nexus. When your money is right buy shield. Throw your firestick in the garbage.

P.S. Shield people be nice, MiBox not that bad. I own shield and mibox.

There are two devices readily available: Mi Box and Shield TV. We don't count Android boxes as legit options. They're crap. So no, there aren't "soooo many" available. There's pretty much 2.
