Has anyone used the steam link app with the shield?

by surpriseskin

I'm looking to get a shield to use as a steam link (among other media things). Can anyone explain the experience they've had with it compared to a regular steam link?

It's not a bad experience IMO though sometimes the controller mapping can be tricky for some reason. Opening games with a starting menu like Fallout 4 are usually don't have as much success.

I could be newb with it though since I'm used to SHIELD TV optimizing and pre-mapping their controls for games through Gamestream.

I used it with my MiiBox great streaming amd such.

I have an xbox wireless receiver plugged into my shield and 4 old 360 controllers. I've used 2 of them to play Human Fall Flat co-op over steam link and it's been flawless. The game isn't particularly taxing on my PC but I can't feel the difference playing on the shield. Steam link support for 360 controllers is excellent.

I have yes. Works fine, little bit more lag and less polished feel compared to gamestream but it's decent.

I don’t have a steam link. But I did play some fortnite on my tv through the shield with an Xbox controller. Didn’t notice any delay at all.

I never used the "regular" Steam Link, but I've been messing with it on my SHIELD connecting to my Ryzen laptop and it's pretty good. Nice, low latency connection. I just wish FF13 on Ryzen was more stable. Tends to hang the machine a lot. I might build a small NUC box to act as a Steam game server and just stick it under the TV.

yes - it works ok, but you need to be running the Steam Beta Client to have the shield controller working.

It's not as good, not as polished, and lacks some features over Nvidia's Gamestream (and associated Steam over Gamestream option).

That said, since you use Linux and an AMD GPU this is your only option. And honestly it's a fine option. Controller setup/configuration can be kinda funky, and the controller controlling the desktop can be kinda funky. For some reason it wasn't opening Steam Big Picture on my desktop automatically. I don't think it can turn on my PC if it's offline, but maybe it can. I don't think it can do 4k HDR, but maybe it can (I've at least seen a setting for 2160p but I can't test it). Pretty sure surround sound is supported, but I'm not 100% sure.

Are you using the term "steam link" as a way to say streaming your games or are you specifically going to use steam's Steamlink app?

Because Nvidia already has a way to stream your games called Gamestream that is built in to the shield. You don't have to use Steams app to do it.
