MKV H.265 Raw 4K Rip Playback Device Suggestions?

by itzxzac

So I have an external hard drive formatted as exFat with a bunch of raw 4K Rips all in a .mkv format. I'm looking for a device that I could just hook my HDD up to and play them all from the hard drive. Preferably with a nice interface.

Any and all suggestions are highly appreciated!

UPDATE: I went with the Beelink GT1 Ultimate, excellent device that has been handling all my UHD raw rips that I throw at it. BUT! LibreELEC IS A MUST HAVE. Without LibreELEC, there's wayy less customization and there's a subtitle bug that causes dropped frames in the regular OS, LibreELEC fixes this.

Nvidia Shield running Kodi or Plex.

Most modern 4K HDR TVs can play them back if you don't want to spend too much money. The interface depends on the SmartOS platform used by the TV.

Nvidia Shield is a good alternative using Plex Media Server running directly on it. This will give you the nice interface and look you're looking for.

DIY = LibreELEC Kodi on an AMLogic s905/s912 box = plays anything you throw at it and has auto everything including refresh/frame rate matching & resolution switching for ultra smooth video playback:

If you can do some minor DIY. It's a far better solution for local HDD video playback vs a Mi Box. Especially 4K material.

Like others have stated any modern 4K TV worth its salt will be able to play 4K rips off a hard drive using one of their USB ports. The interface might not be as nice as you'd like though, my LG TV pixelates the icons pretty hard but the files play perfectly.

The Nvidia Shield TV with Kodi (or a Mi Box 3 if you want something cheaper) can provide a very elegant interface with all the metadata (posters, plot outline, actors, genres etc.) and present it in a variety of ways like this . I wouldn't recommend an Apple TV 4K, no USB port so you'd have to set up a file share off a sever or router.

As an aside whilst exFat should be fine for your HDD you might want to consider switching to NTFS, it's a more robust filesystem and you're less likely to corrupt files. There are compatibility concerns (MacOS writing etc.) but if you value the data it might save some tears later.
