###How to get Fox Sports World Cup 4K APK working on a rooted Shield TV

I was able to get the Fox Sports WC apk working on the Shield TV by rooting it and modifying the build.prop in /system to spoof it as a Hisense TV.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility if you brick your device during this process. I'm only offering tips I found during my own efforts. This should work on any rooted Android TV device, but Nvidia provides factory images that should make recovery from soft bricks possible while other manufacturers may not. Be prepared to fully wipe your device during the OEM unlock or if any problems occur. Don't break your stuff and know how to fix it if you do.

######Tips for Shield TV root Rooting the Shield was a bit of a pain, but I finally got it by partially following this guide ( https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/7frjru/rooting_the_shield_and_using_remote_play_tutorial/ ) and pre-patching the boot.img with the Magisk Manager (as described in the comments).

I had to cut 2 USB Type A cables and solder (or electrical tape) them together to make a male-to-male cable rather than buying one.
If you're already OEM unlocked, rooting should be as simple as grabbing your current boot.img from the nVidia Recover images ( https://developer.nvidia.com/shield-open-source ) and patching it with the Magisk Manager ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 ). Then flashing the patched_boot.img in fastboot with fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img .

######Editing the build.prop

Backup the original build.prop before editing it.
USB mouse/keyboard makes editing directly on the Shield TV easier.
I edited it on my PC and then had to replace the original build.prop using the TWRP file explorer (after mounting System).

Fields to change:

ro.product.model= HAT4KDTV
ro.product.brand= Hisense
ro.product.manufacturer= Hisense

After that restart the device, load up the app and log into your cable provider... You'll have to fast forward to get to the live TV.

Do you have any idea if this would work on the BBC iPlayer app. they are showing the games in UK in 4K but only for specific devices

Do you guys know if the app only works on the Hisense H8E model? And not the H8 model?

Most of the articles I read about the World Cup edition app mention that it works on the H6E and H8E model, but no mention of the H8 model. But just looking at what you changed on the APK to make it work, it seems like the H8 should be able to install the WC app and stream in 4k, correct?

Granted both models are the same price, but the H8 model is available today at a store near me, the H8E will have to be ordered.. and the World Cup won't wait a week for the TV to get here!! :)

Honestly dudes, it legit took me 10 min to just spoof the stream using Firefox and logging in with my fox sports go app and saving it to a strm file and using kodi.

Unless you are looking for a more polish feel, the Firefox method with kodi is a ton faster and you don’t need to worry about rooting.

After changing the build.prop and rebooting I get a non stop "Nvidia Gamecast Service has stopped" popup and it keeps prompting. Any idea how to get around?

Does anyone know what framerate they broadcast this in? I had the modded apk installed on my shield and there's something slightly off with the playback. Wondering if its 50hz as it's filmed in Europe.

Edit: Switched to 50Hz output and it's much better.

Is any of this possible on a roku without root or right off of my computer? It sounds like there is a stream URL you are entering into VLC so why can't I do that right from my desktop?

Anyone have the stream constantly resize with the APK? I have the actual tv and the constant resizing from full screen to about 98% is annoying.

Awesome work I was in the market for a new tv anyways lol, but posting this just In case there could be a fix for my fake element 4K tv. Am i screwed ? (Washed out image) running on amazon fire tv. Had the same results when I loaded kodi but the app has not lagged at all!
