[Shield TV] Solution to Varying Netflix Resolution/Quality

by nadnerbsregdor2018

Hello,

I am posting this as it may be helpful to some people, if they were having the same issues as me.

Using the netflix app via the Shield TV Box I would get 720p-1080p for the first few minutes then it would switch to low quality (480p) after the first few minutes, no matter what movie I would watch.

I tried resetting Internet, disabling IPV6, uninstalling updates and resetting box but none of these provided a solution.

I checked APKMirror for the Netflix Android TV App when I noticed that the shield version is at version 5.3.0, whereas the most up to date version of Netflix Android TV on APKMirror is 5.2.1. I decided to install this to see if it would make a difference, and for the last month any movie I have watched has stayed consistently at high 1080p quality.

I am not sure if this will be of help to people but it solved the issue for me.

Below are the steps to follow

  1. Go to Settings.. Apps.... Netflix... Uninstall Updates.
  2. Download Netflix Android TV from the link below https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/netflix-inc/netflix-android-tv/netflix-android-tv-5-2-1-build-2101-release/
  3. Install downloaded Apk.
  4. Login to Netflix as usual.
  5. Problem should be solved.

P. S: Set Netflix playback settings to Best Quality in My Account section of Netflix website. (Not sure if this is needed, but will ensure best quality will be the default)

On MiBox, las release is also 5.30.

This is probably your ISP causing slower connection.

I have a 4K TV and I could never get Netflix app to play 4k. It worked only when I first got my shield January 2017 then stopped working after that. Any ideas how I can fix it. 1080p works fine. I pay for 4k so that's not the issue.

Thanks for this info. I had the same issue, with latest app version (October 2018). Ive uninstalled updates and installed 5.2.1 as you did and now i can watch all in HD/4k. Cheers
