Google play movies lack of 5.1

by PaterickB

I just got The Incredibles on Google play and the audio is only 2 channel stereo?!? This is with a shield tv. However since I have movies anywhere I try the movie on my old (not 4k) Apple TV and it's in Dolby Digital 5.1. Other movies that are in 2.0 stereo are in Dolby Digital 5.1 as well.

Looking at the description on Google Play does not show 5.1 on these movies. Any way to fix this or should I look a dumping the shield and investing in a 4k Apple TV?

Personally, I've been using VUDU for movie rentals. I find the video and audio quality to be better. Also, all of their movie audio is streamed in DD+ 5.1 surround, unless the movie itself is older and only mixed in stereo.

VUDU is also compatible with Movies Anywhere and has an AndroidTV app.

Google Play Movies is pure crap.

Streaming quality is very poor compared to Netflix. Forget about 4K, HDR, 5.1 or Atmos.

Films don't have multiple audio tracks, so each language is a different film. A film in English is a different movie than the Spanish dubbed version (in my country) when I'm lucky to be able to get a non dubbed version.

Google Play Movies on Android TV do support 5.1 - it depends on the movie, and you can see the surround icon to verify that. Are you connected via optical or HDMI ARC to your AV receiver?
