Updated MiBox to Oreo, and now I can't use an external drive.

by TheMadcore

Before all, sorry about my english.

Before update, I had a 2TB USB hd through a usb hub and I used it for Kodi, Retroarch, and ArcBrowser.

After updated to Oreo, I can't use it anymore. The HD is fine, I can put it on my computer and all the videos and content are correct. But the MiBox aknowledges it when I connect it with a notification, but I can't use it. Now Kodi, Retroarch, Arc Browser, and even ES File Explorer don't see the disk, or see it but can't access it.

I checked the apps permissions, and everything is correct. I don't know what's happening. Anyone had the same problem?

Just found this on my ladies device after seeing it here, oddly, the files still work thru VLC but not Kodi, Total Commander or Root Explorer?

Likely a file ownership/permission glitch.. it sees it just wont access it. hopefully they all release a bug fix soon, Nvidia included, tho this doesn't happen on that box.

Turns out it's missing com.android.documentsui which it needs to assign external storage.

All this time to come out & they still have bugs in it!?

Suggest we all contact their support. I just did. https://www.mi.com/us/support/contact/

yeah, mine too. path not found or something in kodi. huge disappointment

Have you considered attaching your hard drive as a network drive to your router? That's how I have mine connected to my WRT3200ACM running OpenWrt. Very fast read/write over the network to the Mi Box and Kodi.

I have a 1Tb Toshiba HD and it was recognized by Mi Box, I am able to browse it using X-Plore, try resetting the Mi Box to factory settings, maybe that'll fix the issue, that's what I did, however I don't know if the drive wasn't recognized before because I forgot to test it.

That is shitty AF. So what options do I have. Wish I knew that before trying to update. Guess time to buy a shield?

So for now I know: X-plore and MiXplorer are working VLC also reads NTFS USB Kodi and MX are not working FX and Anexplorer pro are not working It's possible that apps need to add support or Xiaomi needs to add firmware support, I think that the problem is in NTFS licensing

Same problem

Seems like the issue is ntfs/exfat. If the HDD is fat32 than all is good and kodi sees it perfectly. I just converted a disk to fat32 and it works.

Same deal with me. My NTFS drive is seen but can't be accessed. Tried exFat and no good either. All worked on Marshmallow... Surely there'll need to be an immediate fix released!!!

CTU

I found fat32 formatted flash drive worked, sadly it has a small limit on size :(

Edit: Tried to install a different file explorer and that reads my drive and now VCL will read it, but not fx file explorer or kodi

It looks like everybody is having the hard drive bug. This update is full of bugs, I don't understand why they rolled out. I would like to get back my marshmallow flawlessly

biggman15

My 1TB Western digital works. But only in Vlc... I don't use Vlc... Although it seems I will have to for the time being.

It would be interesting to know if the nvidia shield with oreo has the same issue

A workaround or temporary fix I found that works is to download File commander.

You can access you external HDD and view all your files/Media, navigate to your movies and selecting a file will then give you an option to open with default player which I selected Kodi.

I noticed with some of the bigger files there is a bit of lag here and there when playing them in Kodi this way, however I still get my 5.1 surround sound pass-tru.If by playing it this way you dont get sound, the trick is to leave kodi running in the background when selecting a file to play in file commander

My Mi Box just updated and I'm in the same boat. I think we're screwed folks, I don't see a patch coming anytime soon as this has been out for several weeks with no update, and being that it's only Kodi and similar apps, Xiaomi has no direct obligation to patch the update. I've tried SPMC as well and it won't read the drives either...

Solved with latest update for MiBox

I'll start off by saying, I'm not an expert at all, so this is not a fix as such but it does let you play files from the external HDD which seemed to be one of the main bugs people have reported. I thought it might be useful to anyone who has been unable to use their external HDD's since updating to Oreo 8.0 android TV.

I bought my Mi Box 3 specifically to play 4K video files from an external HDD, so I was pretty annoyed when updating my new shiny box to Oreo 8.0 screwed that up. I was about to return my box to the retailer when I found this.

Anyway this is my fix/work around/solution.

As I already mentioned I'm not a developer and I am fairly clueless with android boxes in general. It's just something I stumbled upon. Perhaps those that know what they are doing can take a look and see if it is of any use.

any news regarding this issue?

personally, I can access the hard drive content, and also save new files (but only to local folder of the app accessing it, not to the root of the drive). however, I cannot delete existing files..

Anyone else finding the voice inout from the remote very bad since the update too?
