Brought to you by the same tech support idiots that will tell you MiBox MDZ-16-AB is not an authorized Netflix device.
Don't get me started....
That was a clueless response from Netflix CS.
Netflix encodes sound in Dolby Digital Plus (DD+). The MiBox 3 running Oreo will pass that to a device capable of decoding it, just as it did running MarshMallow. If the MiBox 3 does not detect a DD+ compatible device (TV, AVR, what-have-you) it will tell Netflix to send 2-channel sound.
If you override the MiBox' "Auto" sound setting to "Always" (digital), then it'll tell Netflix it has digital, but if the connected device can't decode DD+ then you'll get no sound. (Actually, when I did that, Netflix refused to even play a movie--responding with an arcane "I'm sorry, Reddukks, I'm afraid I can't do that.")
The MiBox 3 does not transcode/down-convert DD+ to plain old Dolby Digital 5.1. It will pass DD 5.1 if that's what's presented to it. (E.g.: I get 5.1 DD on my receiver, via TOSLINK, when using the HDHomeRun app.) The only streaming devices of which I'm aware that currently transcode DD+ to DD are the Apple TV and the Amazon Fire TVs.
It would be nice if the MiBox 3 transcoded DD+ to DD. IMO the S/PDIF port is somewhat worthless without that. I had hoped that with Oreo it would. Alas, I was to be disappointed. Again. (Which is why I have an Amazon Fire TV en route.)
netflix 5.1 dd+ confirmed working on my mi box connected through a tx-nr646 by Onkyo.
some movies output Atmos in netflix on xbox one s.
not that people want to spend money but there are nr646, nr656, and Onkyo TX-NR676 open box between $200 and $250 on Amazon
So Netflix isn't working?
Well this is crap :(
Apparently the Netflix app version is incompatible with Android TV 8, but that’s Xiaomi’s problem. Apparently. All we need to do is get a “compatible device”.
Tried Netflix on Oreo last night, no issues, didn't even notice it wasn't on 5.1 though guess it was just stereo.
So glad I stopped my Netflix sub months ago. Don't have to deal with all the issues anymore plus I never watched it anyway.
I know I'm nitpicking but the smiley face on the CS reply pissed me off
You guys are getting all bent out of shape over nothing. OP called the box a Mi Box 8.0, obviously this thing doesn't exist, and therefore Netflix is going to say it's not supported. It's a Mi Box 3 running android 8.0, which is not AT ALL what the OP said.
Hi guys! I recently bought Mi Box and I'm very disappointed because of Netflix and 5.1 issue. After Oreo update I'm able to see 5.1 audio in Netflix, but it sends probably DD+ only as my amplituner does not decode it.
I have 2014 Samsung smart TV (mid-shelf) and it works slowly, but Netflix works there with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound without any issue! I wonder if the TV does convert DD+ or it gets DD directly from servers. I even think that Mi Box have some video stuttering on Netflix. I just get better quality (smoothness) and audio on my old TV...
It's the same sound system, but it looks like my TV is able to output normal DD from Netflix. Mi Box can't do that.
Another issue is that I thought it will support 10-bit 1080p H265, but it does not.
This may be a problem with the box itself, since when using Kodi, we can transcode on the fly, let's say AAC to DD. Right now, I'm stuck to PS3, since it does the decoding of DD+ to DD, a really disappointing problem since DD+ is supposed to be compatible with legacy DD
I’ve got so fed up with mibox and bought an ATV4K. Ooh booy, everything works perfectly! What a relief. I don’t have to deal with this piece of crap anymore.
I can confirm I am infected with this too
In netflix you can choose the audio either 5.1 or original, works for me although waiting for a fix too.
I was facing same problem after update.
So i went to Setting > Sound > Sound output > AUTO.
and now it plays 5.1 audio.
Hope it helps .
With Oreo I'm getting 5.1 DD+ Netflix audio to my DD+ AVR just fine.
I've seen no change from the previous Marshmallow.
Netflix customer care have no idea what they are on about, they really don't.
The Xiaomi Mi Box even has a proper Netflix ESN number if you look in the Netflix App settings.
This means the device has Netflix approval.
