Casual gamer here - SHOULD I BUY shield?

by ravi90kr

I've a MiBox which I'm happy with, Netflix doesn't work but my tv has that app. But I'm thinking of buying a ps4 for multiplayer online gaming. Question to shield owners is - how is GeForce experience? And is it good for online multiplayer?

I've no clue about GeForce btw. Thanks all.

I don't recommend Android TV for gaming, the Shield TV is $200, the PS4 Slim is $250. Get the PS4. Way more awesome games to play and way more people on multiplayer.

If you want to run a full emulator setup (NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, etc.) Android TV, even Mi Box, works great for that though.

I wouldn't buy it to run your games. Not sure if they even have the games you want to play. If they do, it probably runs fine. At least the games I tested ran pretty smoothly.

But it's great if you already have a gaming pc with Nvidia card doing the heavy duty work and the box just streams it. You can play anything you PC runs.

I'd only recommend it over a ps4 for gaming if you want emulators. Geoforce is neat but you will run out of games fairly quick if you are a heavy gamer and they library doesn't change often. I think there's a few online mp, but i've not played them.

Love my shield, but I don't view it as my gaming device. I enjoy the occasional game on it, but it's primary function is my streaming box.

I recommend for gaming if you want to stream games (either with the built-in Gamestream if you have an Nvidia card or via the Steam link app) or for running emulators. GeForce is pretty eh.

There are a handful of great Android games and ports to Android, but I wouldn't but it just for them.

If you're thinking of buying a PS4, buy a PS4. The SHIELD is a great device, but it won't give you a PS4-level experience with gaming. It's for some older PC games, stuff ported to Android, and emulators. A lot of emulators. That's not to say there aren't good games out there, I play Borderlands through GeForce now, and EvoLand and EvoLand2 are great on the SHIELD. Even Final Fantasy 9 is good (though they haven't ported X for some reason). But it's not going to give you the AAA experience from the AAA games available right now for PS4. It just can't do it.

As a console gamer with a Mi Box, Shield would be a waste in money for you (you'll be playing mobile games). If you were a PC gamer, it maybe well worth the money if you wanted to stream your games to another TV.

Id stick with buying PS4 or console in your case. Which is right for you is another can of worms (I prefer PS4, but Switch or Xbone might be a better fit and are good too).
