Post-oreo annoyances.

by souheil

All new shiny things come with some minor bugs or limitations on release.

There are a couple of annoyances I've experienced after upgrading to Oreo (And executing a factory reset).

Installing an app through the desktop Play Store is not an option (Error: your device is not compatible). Could be a measurement from Google starting with Oreo TV.

Using any key on a physical keyboard pops the on-screen keyboard up, even after disabled all input methods except for gboard (one keyboard must be enabled, switch greyed out. didn't disable it through app settings yet, will update later). This could be fixed with an update later on.

Good thing though, ES explorer (both handset and tv variant) supports sharing through Lan, so sideloading APKs (Firefox 61 for now) is no problem.

The keyboard thing annoyed me too. I downloaded lean keyboard (seach playstore for "keyboard", it's the only English one available. It looks like the MM on-screen keyboard) and then disabled Gboard.

Now the onscreen keyboard doesn't pop up when I use a physical one

Talking of sideloading, turning on ADB debugging in developer options enables ADB over network now (wasn't in MM, but was possible in N betas) so you can also sideload from a PC using ADB too. Ditto you now have the ability to push and pull from the filesystem and open a shell which is great for tinkering, copying config etc.

For the gboard disabled issue, do this:

  1. Go to Language setting, change to other language
  2. Confirm at keyboard that the default keyboard shows gboard
  3. Change back to your own language

Right mouse click (as Back) on my mini wireless keyboard not working anymore and trackpad click to enter after Oreo update
