What is wrong with my MiBox 4K?

by iChrist

Most apps I see people using on AndroidTV like chrome or street view are not in my google play, I feel like my whole MiBox is empty, the only apps I can use are Netflix and Youtube.

Any Idea how to get chrome into it? or actually getting the full playstore?

I am running the latest 8.0.0 version of AndroidTV.

thanks

Sideload. They're not in the TV app store because they are not optimized for use with tv and remote. You can also download puffin browser to access the browser appstore. Chrome sucks on tv, if you're not using a mouse and keyboard.

You were looking at Android Boxes (cheap boxes that uses the Android OS made for touchscreen phones).

You bought an official AndroidTV. It works much better, not sketchy, and made for TVs and media use. You wanted something that that most people wouldn't use on a TV, like maps or moderate/heavy internet browsing.

So simply, you bought the official box that is made for media. You wanted a thrown together box that puts your phone on the TV (normally people regret buying the cheap one).

You can either return and get one of the Android boxes, or use Chromecast.

I used to be like this when I first got my mibox, wants to have lots of apps installed. But in the end I realized that I only use it for media consumption, so live channels for live TV and DVR, plex / emby / kodi for accessing media servers, netflix and youtube for streaming, and spotify for music is enough for me.

Other task like browsing, social media consumption, etc is just not suitable for TV.

If you like to tinker (eg. root, or maybe install openelec or stuff like that), chinese android box is more suitable for you.

Those complaints have nothing to do with Mi Box but with Android TV as a platform. There are much less apps for Android TV than regular Android. No Google Maps, no Chrome, etc. Google doesn't support it well. You have to sideload the regular apps and they won't work as well.
