I've tried the command "launch chrome" but I just get search results. I've also tried installing to it from the Google play store on another device but it says the mibox isn't compatible. I'm guessing this is due to the Oreo update?

Download the APK on a computer from here: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/chrome/chrome-67-0-3396-87-release/chrome-browser-67-0-3396-87-4-android-apk-download/ <- this is the correct APK for mibox.
Put the APK on either google drive, dropbox, whatever.
On the mibox, download a file explorer that supports cloud storage from the play store. I think ES File Explorer can do that without a pro license, if not, just get another one.
Connect to dropbox from the file manager and open the chrome APK. For the APK to install you need to head into settings - security and allow the file manager of your choice permission to install from unknown sources.
When all is set and done, you can launch chrome by saying "open chrome" to the assistant.
With the Shield Prime Video app now working on the Mi Box, there's really no reason to install anything but one of the many 'flavors' of Firefox.
can you try installing 'chrome beta' from a pc to your mibox?
No, this is due to AndroidTV. Chrome does not run on it.

You can sideload chrome and use the sideload launcher but you will need a keyboard and mouse to use chrome.
