[Mi Box] Any users with Samsung sound bars able to get Netflix 5.1 after Oreo update?

by irond13

I think I’ve managed to narrow down my issue at https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/8ty2ig/netflix_51_apparently_officially_unsupported_on/?st=JJ05DVMZ&sh=da5007a6 to Samsung (and possibly Yamaha) sound bars.

I’ve discovered that when the Shield was updated to Nougat, users with the same sound bar as me (HW-K950) experienced the exact same problem.

For the record, Xiaomi support (or affiliated) has been terrible.

I’m awaiting a follow up call from Netflix this evening, who are my last hope at this point (not counting on Xiaomi). It could be that Nvidia, ironically, end up saving the day though (see detailed findings).

I have a Yamaha Sound Projector (YSP-1600) hooked up to my TV via ARC (Mi Box is connected to the TV via HDMI) and with Oreo I get Dolby Digital just fine. I don't know about DD+ because I don't think my YSP supports it, but no issues with regular 5.1 DD surround.

The problem is both the Shield and Mi Box are not supporting Dolby Audio internally (only pass-through so far) and the Netflix app is having issues for some people with some AV receivers, hopefully Netflix should fix it but Xiaomi also must address the inconvenience of not having Dolby Audio support since they advertise it on the package while the Shield doesn't.

Mi Box running Oreo HDMI connected to a Yamaha YSP-2700 Dolby Digital+ (EAC3) capable soundbar then to my 4K TV.

5.1 DD+ Netflix audio works properly.

Every ATV box currently has to be HDMI connected to a DD+ capable audio receiver otherwise expect 2.0 PCM audio only.

My 4K (non HDR) 2015 HiSense TV is also DD+ audio HDMI input capable. 5.1 Netflix Mi Box audio also works with that as well.

I did notice in the HiSense TV audio settings menu, you can send RAW audio in a Passthrough mode out from the TV again, probably via Optical or ARC. Never tried it tho.

BTW: the NVIDIA Shield does not even have a Dolby Audio License - there is no way "it will save the day" by transcoding DD+ > DD
