I am on the fence about buying a mi box 3 but is it worth it? Can someone give me their overall impression of the performance 4K-wise. Does the interface lag when navigating the ui, and how is 4K playback. Thank you.

Considering the amount of posts and issues I see on this sub with it i wouldn't pick one up.
If you want reliable 4K get a Ugreen (ASIX) chipset USB3 > Gigabit adapter - do not rely on anything WiFi only. The ASIX Chipset adapters are highly compatible with the Mi Box.
The only time I had the interface Lag was when the Mi Box was running low on internal storage space OR I had stupidly left it in a 2160p24Hz screen resolution mode after playing around.
The Mi Box - S905X Chipset is more than capable of decoding Bitrates in excess of 4K HDR Bluray specs.
HOWEVER if you want Ultra smooth video playback you need auto refresh switching (Frame Rate Matching) to switch your TV's refresh rate to match that of the source video frame rate. The NVIDIA Shield has this for Kodi, Plex, MrMC and Emby only.
Better still is the Apple TV 4K that has Frame Rate Matching working across a whole suite of Apps like Plex, Infuse, MrMC, Emby, Netflix, Prime Video & more.
Some modern TV's can virtually eliminate video judder thru Motion smoothing / Interpolation:
tldr; If you only use netflix/youtube and need a 4k player for this, you might want to give it a shot. If you want to use kodi (or similar apps) get another box
It's nice for youtube and how fast and responsive the interface is. But if you want it for the purpose of 4k you should invest probably more.
-: The most annoying thing about the box is that it's just like one of these chinese boxes where you have to google for hours to get things running. This is certainly not the quality I'm used to from xiaomi. Some things may work or not. Be prepared for disappointment.
+: It's cheap Interface is very responsive
I have 4k movies in a portable HDD since my internet isn't anywhere near good enough to stream 4k. It's a stuttering piece of shit box. Avoid it at all costs.
If you want 4k, MiBox probably isn't where you want to land. It's a decent enough general streaming device, but 4k is its weakness. Especially without a wired network interface.
