It would be nice to get an update (God forbid Google supports Android TV) but the app still works perfectly and looks clean.
The following was the most interesting part of the article for me, and I wanted to post it here to see what others on here think.
Now, I’m not suggesting that Google turn this into the ultimate remote with guides and pre-programmed buttons and such, but that’s not a terrible idea. Or maybe they build a more powerful remote like that into Google Home, since they sure seem to be investing heavily in that app.
I agree that the Android TV remote app needs updating to improve both performance/connectivity and looks. But I prefer a simply remote style, with a keyboard that works for those annoying apps that don't support voice search. I'm not looking for a complex remote control app.
Google support AndroidTV? Surely you jest.
Update what? Aesthetics? It does what it needs to do. I.e control tv, there isn't much more it can do other than maybe add remote listening and voice controls.

(Some) People are obsessed with updates.
And would it kill them to make a Wear version?
The only reason I use it is for clipboard (inserting text directly to Android TV box) other than that it's pretty useless .
I disagree. It needs to remain simple and fast.
For My Philips TV they have a remote on Android that has all the functions plus the EPG directly in the app. and you can switch channels and load apps etc directly from the remote, plus remote viewing. Mi Box actually have the same thing with the Mi Remote. I agree with this, as the individual TV or box will have functionality that other TV's or boxes don't have, it's up to the manufacturer to support it with the default google version providing the simple functionality.
So I assume all the complainers should take this up with Nvidia and Sony, since apparently they don't have their soft remote.
I assumed the touchpad screen would act as an actual mouse/touchpad when using mouse only apps like Chrome. That would be super handy!
I returnedthe Nvidia shield because I didn't think it that much inovative support from Googles os
TBH it looks good for me. Google would just re-design it with Material 2 which is basically as much White Background as Possible and I would hate to see a bright white screen in my living room.
if you think the android version is bad, you should try the iphone app. it looks the same as this and yet it's horribly broken. it currently sits at 1.5 stars on the app store .
the main reason i try to use it for entering login info for the apps that don't yet support entering a code - netflix is an example that still makes you enter your email address and password. the keyboard feature is completely broken on every ios device i own and has been for almost 2 years now. i've tried ios versions back to 7.0, two different shield tvs, and two different sony tvs, all borked. with each letter you type, it duplicates all the previous text. i reported it two years ago and yet still no fix.
I’m fine with the current look of the app but why in the hell does it not have volume down or up functionality, that’s a baffling oversight. I left my remote at a friends house and have to put my tv on 100 to watch anything because there is absolutely no way to turn up the volume in the app or settings. Android is such a mess sometimes.
I disagree. Because most boxes now or TVs have their own remotes , I don't even use the Android remote app. In the early days it was needed because remotes were rubbish.
Nowadays i only need it if the pairing setup doesn't work with an android tv device. Which is pretty much non existent cos they fixed that (eventually)
I just wish more apps would support keyboard input from the app. Can't believe Netflix and Hbo still make you select letters with the remote.
