Confession - I really, really like Android TV Oreo

by crazy_goat

While I know lots of folks seem to dislike/hate it for technical reasons (like the Mibox) - I've been running Oreo on my Shield TV for about three weeks and I absolutely love it.

The dashboard has far more usability now - I love having my Plex and Netflix recommendations separated on their own ribbons. I feel like this interface is far more useful and usable.

I like it, too, but would like the channels to be better supported. I have a couple apps I frequently use that don't have a channel at all (Prime Video, FuboTV). Also, it annoys me an unreasonable amount that the first item on the Netflix channel is for switching profiles. I don't need that right there.

As a minimalist I love it. Turned off every single useless recommendation bar, just one bar with the apps I want and a black background. Also seems to work really great on my NP, though I realize it doesn't for others.

I prefer the previous version.

Honestly blows my mind how people care so much about it. How much time do you guys spend staring at the home screen lmao

I like the idea but the execution is poor. Been using it for ages as I'm a Nexus Player person.

Channels rarely update which means they're often the same recommendations for days at a time.

The recommendations are poor quality often not relevant to me - or as above are old things that I've already watched.

The what's next doesn't automatically populate so you have to add things there yourself so gets turned off.

In all honesty I very rarely launch anything from the thumbnails - I just the icon on the left as a launcher.

Some of this is developer problems but some of it is inherent in the system.

I don’t dislike it, but not overly thrilled with it. Wish it had more customizable options.

Bodycount9

I like it but I have the previews all turned off. So I just have my row of apps on the screen and that's it. Nothing else.

whiprush

Just wish there wasn't so much whitespace on the left and top.

Mbanicek64

I was convinced I would hate it, but it is ok. I still think the app icons should be bigger/two rows. Also, there should be an option to remove the customize button at the bottom.

I am guessing everyone has the ugly volume slider overlay ??

And no screen size indicators when attempting to resize screen overscan ??

Agree, I actually like the new layout. Just wish YTTV also had a channels line like Netflix and Live Channels. For me this layout is a quick way to see what I'll watch instead of going into each app.

I was meh at first but then I learned about Sideload Channel and that changed everything for me. I have my favorite apps in a row, a row for kids apps, a games row, a utilities row and a PlayStation Vue channel. I love it now.

I'm happy too with Oreo. I've got a MiBox3 with no issues. Guess I'm lucky.

flicter22

I love it. You aren't alone.

napes22

I've love it if I got any sound.

unmistakablyvague

I dig it too. More simple, and customizable

Still praying my sony tv get any update...

My miBox is running like absolute shit. Slow as hell.. locking up. Requiring constant reboots.

Uncertn_Laaife

Is Oreo available on Mibox as well?

kratoz29

Looks much better than before tbh.

PalebloodSky

Been loving it on my Mi Box too. Have a newer Roku 4K TV and started using that Roku interface. Ever since Oreo came out switched back. Love the overall setup and apps run so quick and smooth now.

Mitchtay

I like it aswell. But Netflix looks sooo bad for some reason like 480p. Do you have this issue?

mrmikedude100

I like it as well. Its not perfect but has a lot of potential.

ChrebetEighty

Way better. And when developers start supporting it more it's gonna be even better. You can view so much content across multiple apps at once. Channels app shows what's in my favorite channels. I'm finding stuff I wasn't finding previously.

Bubba_Nosferatu

Yep, I love it.

CTU

I like the interface, but I hate that it broke external drive support on my Mi box and I still can't get Kodi to read the videos any way in which it let the videos fill the libraries properly :(
