How hot is too hot for Nvidia flash drive?

by Max_Roc

Sandisk ultra fit 128gb plugged into extension cord into port furthest from power supply.

Seems fine but how do you guage temp is within normal operating range? Infared measurement or just touch, and where on it?

Any chance of an overheating flash drive damaging the console?

The sandisk drive will shut itself down if the temp gets to the danger zone. You’ll notice this on shield if the drive starts reporting 0 bytes or disappears and comes back with a replug or reboot. The drive will be warm under normal use, if you copying files constantly for a few hours, it’ll get really hot. Earlier models would generally shut down after 30-60 mins of copying but improvements have been along the way and the latest drives seem to generally not shut down even while copying for extended periods.

I use various sizes of this drive. Haven’t been able to kill one yet :)

Damage to the console would only be if the drive pops, and shorts something. As far as the device goes, I think NANDflash works better if warm. (Or is it NVME?)

i suggest you use a usb 3.0 hub to isolate the heat of your flash drive from your shield.

Interesting! My SanDisk Ultra Fit 128gb very recently went into a weird 'read-only' hardware death while plugged into my Nvidia Shield. I had to do an RMA thru SanDisk to replace it. I wonder if it got overheated for too long and killed itself...

If it sets fire to your furniture or melts through your shelf.

If it's that really small flash drive, those are notorious for their heat issues since it's a tiny device that can't dissipate the heat properly. People love it for the size cuz it sits flush, but it's probably not a great idea. I use a regular size flash drive and even have it on a short USB extender cable to keep it away from the Shield TV console itself.

that drive gets crazy hot even on laptops
