Change of the functionality of the search button in the remote controller in Android Oreo

by kanarec

In the previous version of Android TV, the search button allowed you to access the search function in the program you were in. Pressing it in Youtube would take you to Youtube search, pressing it in the PlayStore would take you to the Playstore search and so on.

On the current version, Android Oreo, the search button always takes you to Google Assistant.

I think that the previous approach was more useful than the Android Oreo approach. What do you think?

I noticed this change too and also much prefer the previous implementation.

This came before Oreo actually (maybe not for Mibox users?).

I think it's easier for Google to get it's marketing info if they do one big pool. I doubt they will change it back. But the old way would be better, imo.

Maybe it's going to help someone - in SPMC voice search still works, but after holding ok button for a while. It doesn't work with any other app I've checked.

But when you do a search from your phone through Android TV app it works ok and starts in app search rather than assistant.

This sucks! and it doesn't catch what we are speaking :/

It's an app issue. The particular app needs to be updated.
