Looking for an box that runs Plex client well at $100

by t0shki

I am looking for a box for my pragmatic brother who doesn't like to spend cash on electronics as much as i do. Pitching him a Shield is futile, yet the FireTV Stick i got him hooked with is noticeably underperforming (to me at least) and has this awful OS.

I have scouted Amazon for something in between and found many offers, mostly chinese no-names, and many different configurations and processors that don't ring a bell. Got burned enough with cheap android phones shipping with ad-ware and such .. but i know theres always a dime in a dozen if you know what to look for.

Which ones are worth checking out?

Thanks

Edit: 1080p is enough

Mi Box?

Well there's only two standalone devices that run Android TV right now that are readily available: the $69 Mi Box and the $180+ Shield TV.

Looking for 4k capabilities?

It's not AndroidTV, but I have a Chromecast in my secondary TV and it works great.

Have you taken a look at the pendant-style Fire TV? I know that it supports 4K and you really only need 1080p but that extra juice may make it a bit faster than the standard Fire TV stick.

One of the new Mecool boxes should be good. Runs AndroidTV, No chromecasting though. For less than $100

If in the USA search for a $105 DirecTV Apple TV 4K deal.

The Infuse and MrMC Apps on that have Plex Skin and database support and work better vs the actual Plex App apparently. That combo will absolutely slaughter anything running Android.

Android TV Oreo has just been released, it's an unstable POS on the Mi Box. Stay away.

An apple tv 4, not 4k, with infuse works great and not that shitty plex client that it is in apple tv. Infuse doesnt transcode nothing not even x265.

On ebay you can get it used about $120.
