If someone gives you the hostname that the check phones home to then you could block that host by using an adblocler app such as Blokada, or block network-wide with pi-hole etc.
I updated mine when the update rolled out and it's all good. I didn't notice any issues so far, but I have a pretty standard setup (Samsung FullHD TV) and only use Netflix, some YouTube casting and some other gray area apps.
In fact it's actually better than 6.0 where I had to reboot every couple of days because the video would become out of sync with the audio.
Just don't click on update?
Maybe install a rom or there might be a root solution. Have you seen if there's anything handy in developer settings?
