For just watching tv is the Shield worth the upgrade from the mi box.

by davidherron

I have a Mi Box that I use just for watching tv. But I have seen the Shield TV pro and it caught my eye. Is the Shield worth the upgrade for just the use of watching TV.

Yes the added storage is a plus but that's really all I can think of any input would be great.

(For the record I'm one of the lucky ones with zero issues with the Mi Box on Android 8.0)

I don't game on my Shield. YouTube and Plex account for 80% of my usage. After that maybe 15% to Netflix and 5% to Hulu.

It might be overkill but I don't have any lag or issues. If I did, then I'd wonder if it's just because I need a better device. With the Shield, I have the best device.

I have both. I only use them for TV only. Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, iptv . Both recently updated to 8.0. There is no difference in performance. I actually have my shield hard wired and mi box just wifi. Same performance

ONLY tv watching? Stick with the MiBox, the Shield is focused in gaming and it's overkill, the experience will be almost the same. Also i don't known of any tv app that need that kind of power to run smoothly...

If you are perfectly happy with the Mi Box, then no.

The Shield will be a bit more snappy, and allows for a bit more breathing room, but overall 1080p TV viewing is a very similar experience.

Source: I have both.

For watching TV it's not worth the extra money. Might as well buy a second Mi Box instead for the same amount as one shield.

If you can watch your stuff now with your Mi Box, why would you want to change?

Just for watching TV? No, though it's at a deep discount on Prime right now, so it might be worth getting just for that. But if all you're doing is watching streamed movies in 1080p, the MiBox will do just fine. If you want 4k, or want to use Ethernet, or want to also play some games, then the SHIELD is what you want.

I have both and for secondary rooms in 1080 then the mibox is ok . For your main viewing experience , even in1080p the shield is worth it . theres way less lag, less bugs, more app compatibility and more flexability

get the shield on the prime day sale then sit back and relax

Some people call it over kill, which I really don’t get but hey that’s just me. I call it buying once and done. They are upto what, mibox 3 now? And I’m sure there is a 4 on the way.

But still there is only 1 Nvidia Shield. Now before anyone goes off. Yes their is a 2015 and 2017 model, but still the same hardware in both. Only change was the foot print.

Do you need the pro? No probably not, save the extra $ and get the 16gig, if you need the extra storage later add a external drive. But this is just my opinion and yes I use my shields for primarily watching tv.

Define what - "watching TV" includes ?

Apps, Free to Air TV, paid for video steaming - we have no idea what you exactly mean ?

If all you do is stream to the box, I don't think it's worth the upgrade.

I got the Shield a week or so ago and like it so much more. Had the MiBox and it was buggy and you had to side load Amazon and hope it worked. At $150 I think it’s a no-brainer. At the regular price I get the apprehension.

I see no difference in picture quality watching anything 1080 and under except for differences you'd expect from a 4K display vs a standard HD.

The performance differences come in response time, load times etc. For example the time it takes for streams, apps, etc to load.
