How to improve the user experience with wireless keyboard?

I have been using an universal control with airmouse and keyboard with my Mi Box. However the keyboard does not work well with the stock android tv keyboard. For example, when I press enter or arrow key on wireless keyboard, it will be applied to the virtual keyboard, other than the input field. I tried to disable Gboard app. The virtual keyboard stopped showing up but enter key still not function on the input field.

Has anyone figured out a way to make it work properly?

I use an app called Leankey Keyboard. Go into playstore and search "keyboard" and you'll find it.

In settings, enable LeanKey keyboard and disable Gboard.

LeanKey Keyboard looks exactly like the old MM keyboard and most importantly will not pop up when you use an external keyboard.

Also, LeanKey Keyboard was the only keyboard I found for AndroidTV.

for how little i need a hw keyboard, i just deal with it by hitting escape once or twice to dismiss the leanback keyboard but still leave focus on the input item. from there all your keys should work normally. it helps to have a combo keyboard+touchpad like the k400, etc. since submission of input is another can of worms.
