Mi Box 3 audio sync issues - is there really no fix for this?

by xevilrobotx

I just got a mi box 3, was pretty great for a couple of days until the audio on every app got out of sync. Everything is like watching a (very) badly dubbed foreign film.

Doing some Google/Reddit searches shows some other people having the problem - but I've tried every potential solution I could find with no luck.

I've tried:

  1. turning it off and back on again (and also doing so by leaving it unplugged for a very long time, but even if that worked - and t didn't - I don't think having to unplug it every couple of days is a viable long term solution)
  2. Changing Audio from PCM to HDMI (setting to auto makes it go to SPDIF, which I am not using and gives me no sound at all)
  3. Going into developer settings and setting HDMI to best frame rate instead of resolution
  4. Factory Reset

Anyone who had this problem get the Oreo update and have it fixed? Not sure what else to do other than just return it.

Thanks!!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that if I open something in VLC, where you can fix audio lag, I can tell that the audio is exactly 1000ms off from the video.

I had that same issue with android 6, it was random and i always could solve it by restarting. Since I updated to Oreo I haven’t faced it again, however I can’t assure it won’t happen again...

1 second is a lot. I noticed the PCM output on mine is maybe 250ms (not sure but guessing about that). Actually though it was my 4K Roku TV but yea maybe it's the Mi Box Oreo.

Does your TV have a setting that allows you to adjust audio sync? Many models do.

Return the Mi Box to the store.

There simply are too many issues with the Oreo Firmware that will make the device unusable till Xiaomi get off their collective asses as fix numerous problems.

That could take another year ...

I also have a MiBox and have experienced frequent voice synch issues using trhe Netfix App which I installed on the box. I live in NZ. Subjectively, the voice seams to be out of synch (ahead I think) by about 3-4 seconds. I did some reading about CDN (Content Delivery Networks) and was wondering if maybe I was connecting via a high latency link. I was using OpenDNS for family protection, so I changed my IP-Config on the MiBox to use a local DNS address. (TrustPower NZ). This did not work. So maybe Netflix uses a much smarter CDN technique than simple DNS routing based on the geo-location of the DNS Server? To be honest, I am not a CDN Expert - and this might be a total red herring.

About CDN - Wikipedia says: Request routing directs client requests to the content source best able to serve the request. This may involve directing a client request to the service node that is closest to the client, or to the one with the most capacity. A variety of algorithms are used to route the request. These include Global Server Load Balancing, DNS-based request routing, Dynamic metafile generation, HTML rewriting, [6] and anycasting . [7] Proximity—choosing the closest service node—is estimated using a variety of techniques including reactive probing, proactive probing, and connection monitoring. [4]

I then hunted around in the Mibox for any settings associated with location or geography. There was an option which allowed Apps to access my Wifi location. I switched this setting on. I also left my MiBox powered off overnight. My MiBox connects to our broadband via Wifi.

For the last couple of nights, the problem has not returned. It is too early to tell if this has fixed it - but I am quietly keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm gonna tell ya what fixed mine and I've had 0 prob since.for one let me point out that I don't use kodi and all I do use is movie apks which are becoming quite the aggravation these days.but I had tried everything and decided to try something I didn't think would matter at all.I uninstalled my Mx player and downloaded VLC AND I haven't had another problem since.audio video its dead on and it seems to just be the better all around player for the mi box after the update.how this helps someone out.have a good day

Go to Device - About click multiple times on Build until you unlock Developer options Go back to the main menu and then to Developer option - General change Hdmi optimization to Best Framerate. it will restart and it will be fixed.

Received a new MiBox S recently. My setup is MiBox to HDMI switch to TV - then TV Digital Audio Out via Optical to Receiver. My daughter noticed several instances of audio out of sync while watching Netflix. I tried a number of things but I think the solution was to set the MiBox audio to PCM as well as the TV Digital Out to PCM. Just finished a full length movie - so far all is good. Will update if situation changes.
