Is it a good idea to buy a mi box now?

by The12MonkeysWitness

Looking for an Android TV box in the same price bracket. And Google cast is a must (unfortunately not available of some lesser known Chinese Android TV boxes).

Yep I picked one up at Walmart like 4 days ago, got the 8.0 update and everything is running great. Coming from a cheap mx3-g box. Mibox is really nice.

With the new update I think is worth it.

Google cast is not a problem, Kodi runs great, VLC too

Just note that certain receivers and TV combinations have issues with the 8.0 Update. Something to do with HDCP 2.2

Maybe, the question is do you need these features like these working properly ?

  1. reliable WiFi
  2. reasonably smooth video playback with Netflix, currently it stutters far worse vs using Marshmallow Firmware.
  3. reliable passthrough audio without audio dropouts when using Apps like Netflix and Kodi
  4. a Ethernet/LAN port

Because there is now a competing Google Certified Android TV Oreo 8.0 platform coming on to the market called the MECOOL KM8 :

The makers of MECOOL devices (Videostrong) have actually been providing a lot better after sales Firmware support vs Xiaomi, and they have strong support from the Freaktab Android TV ROM developer community. Something Xiaomi can only dream about.

After sales support is really important long term IMHO.

Google Certified = Google Cast capable
