Shield TV on Sony 900e

by dabbingsquidward

I have seen many posts regarding purchasing a Shield TV when you already have an Android TV built into the TV.. but I cant seem to find one good answer.

Is it worth it? Right now I am deciding between a PS4 Pro (i have an xbox one (not x) and a gaming pc) or a Shield TV. I have a gaming pc, so I will be using the Shield for Gamestream and Media. But is it worth it? Should I just get the PS4 pro?

Is the shield TV a lot faster than the built in Android TV? e.g, my Kodi runs quite slowly on the built in TV when browsing addons. Also does the Shield TV have the same media support as the built in functions? (HDR, colorspaces, upscaling etc etc)

Shield TV will be faster yes, the current SOC on current TV's is nowhere near the Tegra in performance, plus it has a Gigabit ethernet as opposed to 100mbit on the TV.

Having said that, if you're gonna be gaming and already have the Sony, you can already try the Steam Link app and see how it goes for you

Id probably buy the shield now and save for a ps4pro later down the line. I mainly use my shield for movies and tv. Plays 4K x265 mkvs with no trouble. Used the steam link and Nvidia game stream feature and had no issues. I have both myself (recently bought a 65" x930e) I use my shield more than my ps4. I did buy the shield in between getting a ps4 and a pro. I only got the pro after buying my last 4K tv. Games do look great though, especially God of War.

I have also an xe93 with the mibox(great box, slow network), apple TV(also great, Dolby vision, but too locked down, returning it soon) and a ps4 pro(OK for 4k HDR gaming, great game library, otherwise not so great for 4k HDR media).

I had the nvidia shield. While it has great performance, it's not the end all and be all device. For this kind of money I think is should offer more, but I'm not into the gaming aspect of it, so I can't speak for that.

Remember that you can use steamlink an you TV also.

Edit: you might want to look into Xbox also. I think they take 4k and HDR more seriously than ps4. It also have Dolby vision support
