Audio from Nvidia Shield to Denon Amp

by chrisr34000

Hello,

I am looking for a solution in outputting audio from the Nvidia Shield to my older Denon DRA-F107 receiver, which is connected to my passive stereo speakers. My TV is a LG 60PK990.

The receiver has only analog inputs in the back:

And a jack input in the front (right bottom corner):

The TV has the following connectors:

The TV has no settings, where I can choose to output only audio via analogue composite.

After researching the issue, I found that I have (primarily) two options:

  1. a HDMI extractor which connects the Shield with the TV (via HMDI) and the AMP (via composite AUX).
  2. I could connect the TV to the Shield with HDMI and use the digital TOSLINK output (PCM) of the TV to connect the amp. For this purpose I would need a DAC.

My questions are now:

a) What would you recommend out of these two options? Which route offers the best sound?

b) Also: If I choose Option 1), would I be able to play sound files from my Android mobile phone without turning the TV on?

c) What is more expensive: Getting a HDMI extractor or getting a small DAC?

d) Are there other options which I am missing now and can be recommended?

Thank you for your time!

Best option I can see that fits your needs is using a HDMI extractor (HDMI in to HDMI out + 3.5mm out), and then using a 3.5mm to RCA cable. This way it will bypass the TV and you can still cast to the Shield without needing the TV to be on when casting music.

Doesn't your TV have a headphones socket at all? The simplest way would be to connect that to one of your L/R inputs of your Denon

An HDMI extractor will still give you only stereo output, unless you get one that has digital optical and buy a DAC anyway, so might as well skip the extractor and connect the DAC to to the TV.

would I be able to play sound files from my Android mobile phone without turning the TV on?

if you mean by casting to the Shield, then yes HDMI extractor will help but only if you switch off or block all CEC funtionality.

You can plug a USB sound card in to the Shield TV to output analog or digital output. I'm doing it with a super cheap 5.1 USB sound card. It just works, no configuration or anything.

And since I have powered speakers attached to the sound card I can cast audio to the Shield TV without turning in the TV, if the Shield is on. CEC may be an issue for this.

I would get a small DAC from Amazon (around 15 USD) that you can stick to the back of your TV. It can probably be powered by the USB port on your TV. Connect the optical audio out (cable is around 5 USD) from the TV to the DAC and then use phono cables into the amplifier.

Taking the audio from the TV instead of the Shield will mean you can get all your TV audio (i.e. broadcast signals, other HDMI inputs etc) into the Denon system, and not just the Shield's audio.
