Shield/900F

by jakestgermain

I would like to get a xbr49x900f for my bedroom. I can only fit a 49-50" there. I am running shield boxes throughout my house. I have an LG OLED as my main TV with shield and smaller TVs in several other rooms also on shields. Would there be any benefits/drawbacks to put a shield on a TV that already has android tv out of the box?

Go for it. That's a great TV, but you can't go wrong with the Shield's horsepower over the TV's Android OS.

It's fine. It will be faster than the built in Android TV.

Do you guys think it's the best 49" out there? I am spoiled with the OLED in living room.

Depends on how you use it. I use a mibox in my bedroom, but there's definitely moments I wish it was a shield. Especially with the new GeForce Now, or if you have a GameStream pc.

Little things are nice to have unified. Like being able to mount a network drive natively. Have the interface be the same speed. It's not that the mibox is slow, it's just that the shield is perfect 99.9% of the time.

It would also be nice to add more Nvidia game controllers without having to drop $60 USD on just the controller.

My suggestion is go with just the TV for now. It can be nice to not have the clutter of a separate device. If you find yourself wanting more, go get another Shield.

Is that a 55?

I have an x900f, and love it! Here's what you need to know...

Android TV is bogged down by some bloat apps. They can be disabled and you'll see immediate and drastic performance improvements. The key apps to disable are Sony shelf, Sony select, and samba via Settings > Apps.

X900f has not been updated to Oreo yet, and I haven't seen a target date for it either.

X900f handles DolbyVision (Netflix is utilizing this on their originals lately), whereas ShieldTV does not.

I found it better to buy my TV on sale and save over $500. Then buy a Shield 500 hhd version.

GravityDead

Well it's really not a tough question!

You already have shield, so you know the performance/cost ratio. Try to use the tv inbuilt os for sometime and if you think shield is still worth it or the tv OS lacks something which is important to you then go for it else why waste the money.
