Is there a way to get deinterlacing working on Oreo on the Mi Box?

by aclee_

I just updated my grandma's Mi Box to Oreo, and I just noticed this. Kodi says deinterlacing is off and I can't turn it on, and the HDHomerun app and the Live Channels app both say the same thing. It's really frustrating since the sports channels we have here are output at 1080i and they look choppy without the deinterlacing. Is there a fix, or am I going to need to get a new one?

I always experienced interlacing with it. I didn't think it had the ability to do it on the fly due to the amlogic issues all the companies are blaming each other on. With nougat I could run a dev root command which fix it, but that was because it was a developer build with root features - not a release build like the forced Oreo one.

Half motion, broken choppy deinterlacing is a known problem on ALL AMLogic based android platforms that use EXOplayer (Live Channels) or Mediacodec (Kodi) hardware decoding and no matter what flavor of Android you use.

Hassle Xiaomi on mass on their EU forums to get them to pester AMLogic to fix this long standing issue.

This is one reason why people are buying those dual boot MECOOL Android TV devices because there are no problems with deinterlacing when running LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.

Be aware if you dual boot you need a USB dongle mini WiFi receiver because BT remotes will not work using a different OS. This remote would work well:

Another alternative with the MECOOL's is to use the old SPMC 16.x App with a HDHomerun because that still uses reliable Amcodec hardware decoding and deinterlacing, same as LibreELEC.
